The church clock

Our poor old church clock has got into a terrible state of dilapidation, and the exclamation, – "there, the church clock stands still again," is almost an every day occurrence.

It has: "Ticked and toiled, and told the time,

"for very nearly ten score years,”

Having been put up, according to the date on it in 1667 and is a strong, but very rude, piece of machinery that has worn itself out after a daily and nightly routine of nearly 200 years; its congener, the old town pump, was voted a nuisance sometime since, and taken away, the fact immortalised in song by the rhyming Baker, and has since become useful at the shambles; the stocks and whipping post disappeared some years since, and nothing remains now of past centuries but the old clock.

It has been talked about having a subscription got up to procure a new one, but nothing has been done, and we merely throw out this hint in the hope that some steps may be taken to enable people to know this "time o’ day" more correctly than is possible from a cranky old clock that “strikes when it pleases, or leaves it alone."
