Serious accident – early on Monday morning a serious accident occurred at the mill occupied by Mrs Jenner and Higgs. At about 8 am a small portion of the bay between the mill and the cottage gave way.

The opening very quickly grew larger by the force of the water, and in a very short time a tremendous torrent came down, flooding the ground floor of the mill, and doing considerable damage in its course. It was thought at one time that the foundations of the mill would be washed away, but they stood firm.
The number of sacks of corn stood in several inches of water and will of course be much damaged.
The accident will not stop the working of the mill, it being also supplied with steam power.
The pond was drained of its contents and about 120 fish were caught. The heavy rush of water continued for about three hours.
