West Sussex County Times - Saturday 18 January 1879
—Mr Edwin Steere, the superintendent. of the Gas works, who has for some days past been engaged with a workman in blocking up an escape of gas at the northern entrance of the church, was found lying in the hole, which had been dug close to the gates, in a state of insensibility by the sexton
(Mr. William Bennett) on Saturday. The services of another gentleman being called into requisition, Mr. Steere was speedily extricated from his dangerous position, was conveyed home to Broad-street, and medical assistance called in, but he failed to recover consciousness for upwards of an hour. He is now, however, rapidly improving.
