On Saturday evening a six mile walking match came off on the Crawley Road, beyond Handcross, between H. Hanmore and W. Robinson, two local amateurs. The former distinguished himself some time ago by walking against time on the Burgess Hill road, doing three miles in 27 minutes, as reported in this journal at the time. The match on Saturday was for a stake £1, we understand , and was won by Robinson, who covered the distance in about 50 minutes. Some of the onlookers expected at least a struggle at the finish, but we are informed that after about half the distance was covered Hanmore gave up, being nearly half a mile behind.
We also hear of a a running match between two men of Haywards Heath, named Herriott and Knight, run last (Monday) evening, the distance being from Butler’s Green to the Sussex Hotel. The contest resulted in an easy victory for Herriott.
