Hayward’s Heath
Shocking death - about a quarter to six o'clock on Thursday evening, a ticket collector, named William Pelling, was literally cut to pieces by an express train. Deceased, who was recently removed from the Kemp Town Railway Station, was in the act of crossing the line from the rear of an upper train standing against the platform, when the down express dashed through the station and struck him in full view of the passengers.

The next instant a sickening site presented itself; the mutilated remains of the deceased lying about on different parts of the metals.
Mr Chart, the stationmaster, who had taken the precaution to use the subway just at the same time as the deceased attempted to cross the line, had the remains collected and removed to a stable adjoining the Liverpool Arms.
Here an inquest was held on Saturday, and a verdict of, "Accidental Death" returned.
