Proposed memorial for fallen warriors –
Mid Sussex Times Tuesday, August 5, 1902
Like so many other places in the county, Haywards Heath had, during the progress of the South African war, to mourn the loss of some of her sons (three) who laid down their lives in the service of King and country.
Up to the present the memory of these brave fellows has not been commemorated by a local memorial, but now that hostilities are happily at an end, it is proposed by the vicar to erect, in Saint Wilfrid's churchyard, a granite cross which may teach, as he writes in the current number of the "Parish Magazine", to after generations the duty of self sacrifice where the cause of their country is at stake.

The reverend gentleman has ascertained that such a memorial will be appreciated by the families and relatives of the fallen soldiers, and he launches this proposal with the statement that there will be no collecting for it. He has undertaken to receive donations – large or small – from all desirous of contributing, and at a later date the donors will have an opportunity of expressing their views as to the design of the memorial cross.
The idea of a collective monument will doubtless meet with public approval.
