CUCKFIELD Stone-pounding at Cuckfield Workhouse has given rise to much dismission* of late, and on Friday the Guardians agreed to allow oakum-picking as an alternative task, the labour master (Mr. Brasier) having full discretion in the matter.

For refusing to do stone-pounding, Frederick Elton has been sentenced by the Haywards Heath Bench to a month's hard labour, and for wilfully smashing twelve squares of glass and an iron utensil he was given another fortnight's hard labour.
