THE MID SUSSEX TIMES - TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 27 1927
To the Editor of THE MID SUSSEX TIMES
THE DANCING CRAZE.
Dear sir, – I am fully in sympathy with "a resident rate player," who complains in your last issue of the late hour to which dances continue at the Queens Hall of Cuckfield. I am thankful that I do not reside near enough to the building to be disturbed by the company returning home between two and 3 o'clock in the morning, but I can feel for those who have to look forward to many nights of disturbed sleep during the winter months.
These so-called "carnival dances" and "crazy night" are promoted not by ratepayers for a worthy local object, but by young fellows for private gain, and those who attend – and it is stated that many come from distant parts of Mid Sussex – care not a jot for the feelings of those who reside near the hall. Surely the time has come when the urban district Council should seriously consider the matter and study those who decide to rest at night rather than encourage these young people in their madness.
Yours faithfully,
Another ratepayer.
Cuckfield.

To the editor of the mid Sussex Times.
Dear sir, – referring to a letter in your last issue by "a resident rate player," I have very much pleasure in presenting the following: from May, 1925, to May, 1927 the authorities concerned have been paid £58, representing a weekly ingoing of 12s and 6d. Does not this item benefit more or less all ratepayers? I may further add that local charities from time to time have secured benefit from the promoters to the extent of £35. They include the Hospital Building Fund, the Children's Treat Fund and the Old Folks Dinner Fund.
Are not all these worthy of support? Inasmuch as we desire to increase the social life of our town, we are apparently intervened by a killjoy, or someone who desires to live for himself or herself alone, and therefore disturb the pleasures of many. Under the circumstances I suggest "a resident ratepayer" still to retain the name, and attend the dance on October 5, after which time he or she can reveal an opinion of the whole affair.
Yours faithfully C. T. Lelliott,
dance secretary.
Cuckfield.
