1927: Dough weigh me

A fine of £1 and 1s. costs was inflicted on Cuckfield baker named Charles Cain, at named at the Haywards Heath Petty Sessions on Monday, for. selling bread which was deficient in weight. William Chamberlain, Inspector of Weights and Measures, proved the case. The deficiency on 21 loaves was 2lb. 7.5ozs - an average of 1.5ozs. for every 2lb. loaf and just over 2oz, for each 4lb loaf. Defendant said he had been in ill-health and his men evidently did not exercise sufficient care. He had been in the business at Cuckfield 21 years and never before had received a complaint as to shortage.
