Mid Sussex Times, November 11 1942

Killed while lying in road,

Inquest on soldier at Haywards Heath.

Driving along Staplefield Road, Handcross, about 10:30 pm, on October 30, Mr Cyril Leslie Parker of Limehurst cottage, Paddockhall Road, Haywards heath, saw an object lying in the middle of the road in the path of his car. He braked, but was unable to avoid the object, and the car ran over it. On getting out of the car he found the body of a soldier pinned underneath it.

Extricating the body took about three hours, breakdown apparatus had to be brought in in order to lift the car.

The body was identified as that of private Frank John Green, aged 34, an overseas soldier, who leaves a widow and four children.

At the inquest conducted by Dr E F Hoare, (Coroner for East Sussex) at Haywards Heath on November 2, PC Message said that marks on the front identification plate of the car indicated that this had struck deceased's head.

The coroner said there was nothing to show how deceased came to be in the road.

He found that Green was killed by a motor car while he was lying in the road, and he exonerated Parker from blame.
