Scene Was Set To Perfection

Ladies dressed in the rich, padded finery of the days of the first Elizabeth walked yesterday In Cuckfield in surroundings perfect for their attire.

Members of Cuckfield Women'’s Institute staged their Elizabethan revels in the old world garden of the Old Vicarage, and most of them dressed for the occasion.

Wearing gowns authentic to the last detail they mingled with their guests on the terraced lawns, served them from behind decorated booths with posies and gingerbreads popular with the ladies for centuries.

Others staged a miming entertainment in costume, while children, released from school, danced around the maypole. There were boat trips for the more daring, fancy dress competitions for the more resplendent and square dancing for everyone.
