IT was back to school with a difference this term as youngsters from Cuckfield took part in a procession through the village to their new home.

Nearly two hundred pupils walked up the High Street in brilliant sunshine on a short but historic journey to the new Church of England primary school in Glebe Road.

The procession was led by Barry Jones, treasurer of the school governors, the Rev Eric Hayden and headmaster Bob Shepherd.

Once in their new building, the children quickly settled to the unfamiliar luxuries of a gym, music and drama room and on site dining hall. Previously they had to walk across the churchyard to a separate canteen.

Mr Shepherd said: “Everyone is absolutely delighted. The space and resources available are excellent. Even facilities like the toilets are a joy - we have gone from the basic traditional school toilets to clean, sparkling facilities. In every way, it is just a pleasure to be here.”

Built by Hove firm Paris Construction and designed by architects Felce and Guy, also of Hove, the single storey building includes rooms for quiet study attached to each group of classrooms.

Managing director of Paris Construction Paul Clarke said: “A glazed courtyard, complete with pond and planting, gives the whole complex a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”
