Updated: Dec 3, 2023

Mid Sussex Times - Tuesday 11 September 1906

THE DUST NUISANCE.

The Surveyor reported that, as instructed, he had obtained and applied calcium of chloride to the roadway in South Street and on Town Hill, and so far it had been beneficial. He had been unable to carry out the proposed tarring of roads owing to the weather breaking, and when that improved again he was unable to procure tar locally.

Those residents who promised to pay for tar had since offered to pay for calcium of chloride for treating the roads, but at present it did not seem necessary. He suggested that the Council purchase a sixty-gallon portable tar heater from the Southdown Breweries Company, at a cost of £3 10s. The Council adopted the latter recommendation.
