1911: Shocking fatality at Cuckfield

SHOCKING FATALITY AT CUCKFIELD.

MAN FALLS OFF A WAGGON AND IS RUN OVER AND KILLED


A terrible accident, attended by fatal results, befel a carter, named John Nye, of Church Street, Cuckfield, at Cuckfield yesterday (Monday). He was in the employ of Colonel Stephenson R. Clarke, of Borde Hill, and had been carting stone from the direction of Ansty during the day, and had just passed through the town with a load between four and five o’clock in the afternoon, when it is supposed that, overcome the heat, he fell asleep, and on waking up with a start pitched off the waggon and the wheels passed over his body. He was terribly injured, and was conveyed to Dr. King’s surgery, but died outside the house before he could be attended to. Deceased was a middle-aged man, and leaves a widow and seven children. An additionally sad feature is that he had a visit yesterday from two brothers whom had not seen for long period.
